“Pete’s Open Source Journal on Driver Heaven, said that it has been five months since products have been released, but ATI is still unable to supply Linux drivers for the products.”

Thank you Pete! I’m glad this is making news. I realized this sad fact back a couple years ago when I was first getting into Linux. ATI just has crappy Linux drivers.

After reading the Digg discussion, I can see people just don’t really get it. Yes, Linux is 5% (or less depending on how you count) of the desktop market. But as Pete said. Linux users aren’t usually your average computer user. They’re the power users, server administrators, network administrators, etc. They may only be 5% of desktop users, but they’re arguably the most important and have a larger sphere of influence when it comes to purchasing decisions.

Think about it. Say I’m an IT manager at a company and we just got the budget to buy new laptops for our department. Yay! Chances are, we’re going to use Linux somewhere in our company and while Windows to Linux connectivity isn’t that bad, Linux to Linux is still better. What laptop am I going to choose, the ATI one or the nVidia one? Unless I get a screaming deal on something else, probably nVidia. You might say well that’s just an example. But I know
I saw the arguement that since Linux doesn’t run any CAD or 3D games, ATI doesn’t need to care. It doesn’t matter that I wouldn’t be running any 3D apps in this type of setting because ATI’s current Linux drivers don’t support nonstandard resolutions. Most laptops today have widescreen panels with, you guessed it, non-standard resolutions.

Think about this from a developers standpoint. Would I develop an app or a game for Linux knowing full well all my ATI users are going to have sub-par performance? No way! Of course some do, thankfully (Unreal Tournament, I’m looking at you).
This goes beyond just supporting Linux gaming though. What’s holding people back from converting to Linux completely? Software/Drivers is #1. People want their games and office and productivity and they really don’t care what OS it runs on, just that they can use it. It’s the same as TV shows. People don’t care what network they’re on, they just want to watch their shows. If ATI offered a decent Linux driver, that’s one less hurdle people have to overcome. nVidia somehow does it and does it well, why can’t ATI? Pete mentions in his article that if they cared, they could even make Linux drivers a bragging point.

I hope this article and bloggers like myself light a fire under ATI’s butt because I think they are just as capable of making a Linux driver as nVidia is. And it’s just one more piece of the Linux desktop puzzle.

Blog format idea

Posted: 1:02PM Tagged: Life

I’ve heard of link blogs that just post links to other things without any thought or elaboration on those links. Then there are moblogs, which are a feed of images from your camera or phone. Well, I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “You learn something new every day.” How about a blog where you write about something new your learned everyday. I guess it wouldn’t have to be an every day thing, but it’s something you could probably do with regularity. And then you’d have a searchable knowledge base of random facts. It’d be fun to start every post with “Today I learned…” Now, what to title this blog. How about a learn blog.

An article decontructing John C. Dvorak’s recent article speculating that Apple will drop OSX.

read more | digg story

Yes I’m going to open that can of worms. If you’re unfamiliar with what’s going on here. John C. Dvorak posted an article saying how Apple would dump OS X and switch to Windows and proceeded to give a number of arguements for this bold statement. Of course everyone under the sun said “No way! Dvorak is nuts!”

Apple ComputerAnd rightfully so. He really doesn’t make a very compelling arguement. His #1 reason? Adobe is dragging their feet on porting Photoshop. Come on! Photoshop is a huge application and porting it to a universal is going to be quite the task. A large part of his justification also has to do with the ’switch’ campaign. It’s not effective, iPod’s aren’t bait enough to switch, etc. It just doesn’t add up and some things are almost unrelated. So what if iPod’s don’t use firewire any more! They obviously see something in USB (like not having to worry about two different connectors for different platforms).
Now. Where do I stand? I’m still firmly in the OS X camp on this. OS X is Apple’s thing. It makes a Mac a Mac. Without it, it’s just a cool looking, high priced PC. And given Apple’s Think Different motto, they aren’t about to go around using the same OS as everyone else.

What I can see happening is Windows being able to be run on the new Macs uninhibited. Currently, Microsoft doesn’t care what other operating systems you run on your computer. Mac OS X shouldn’t either and Apple has said publicly since the Intel conversion started that they won’t prohibit this.

Worst case scenario: The user buys Apple hardware (including OS X), wipes hard drive of OS X, and throws Windows on it. Apple doesn’t care because it’s already made it’s dime. Windows doesn’t care because it looks like any other PC to it. Microsoft should be happy because, hey, that’s another copy of Windows sold.

Checks Are Obsolete

Posted: 12:02AM Tagged: Life, Technology

CheckSeriously! What need is there for checks anymore. I hate writing them and keeping track of them. They take forever to process. The only thing I write a check for is to other people and one of my student loans because they don’t have a way to pay online.

How hard is it to set up an online payment system that’s secure? I bet there’s sites you can do it in a day in. And I could build a site from scratch in probably 3-4 days.

The business world is going paperless and money is going with it.

A Wilhelm ScreamEight years ago, on a recommendation from a friend, I picked up Less Than Jake’s Losing Streak. From that moment on, I was hooked. On Wednesday, I finally saw the band for the first time live.

My friend and Decoy photographer, Matt hit Minneapolis’ Quest Club Wednesday night for the action. Due to a few circumstances ( *ahem* one of my dogs crapped all over and it took awhile to clean up *cough*), I missed Damone and Rock n Roll Solders opening, but I’m sure they were spectacular. I’ve never heard either of the two before, so I wasn’t disappointed. That left the two final bands of the night, A Wilhelm Scream, and Less Than Jake.

A Wilhelm Scream was everything, I’d heard they’d be and more. It truly is a shame they don’t get more recognition because they are, in my opinion, one of the best new punk bands. Things got off to a raucous start with “The King is Dead.” As a band, they were extremely tight. Angelini’s drumming was much more pronounced in the mix than on record. There’s plenty of talent there. Nuno interacted very little with the crowd as they blasted through tracks from both Ruiner and Mute Print. Things came to a close with “The Rip.” I hadn’t ever noticed before; the song makes a perfect closer. The final riffs set up a perfect march off stage.

Grade: A

Less Than JakeAfter what I’d just witnessed, I would’ve been content with calling it a night. It was just icing on the cake by the time Less Than Jake took the stage. The crowd was going long before they took the stage, and the band came on to chants of “L T J.” Chris and Roger weren’t shy one bit, often joking back and forth. Like AWS, they played a healthy mix of material from their back catalog. I was impressed with how many lyrics I remembered even from songs I hadn’t listened to in years. Two lucky fans made it on stage that night. Trombonist Pete is quite the dancer, and so there was a dance off. Too bad the clown they pulled up on stage was more interested in the mic than dancing. Pete was the winner, hands down. Later, Chris picked out some kid, let him hang on stage and drink water all because “If you put enough gel in that thing, you’d have a football helmet.” That’s LTJ for you. Fun loving until the end!

Grade: A

Even though earlier in the night, I was forced to clean up dog excrement, the little over 2 hours I spent at this show made my night. I got to see two bands I enjoy immensely for the first time; one eight years in the making.

It was also announced at the show that The Quest Club is now officially open again. The club has been in jeopardy over the last few months for various incidents that occurred in and around the club. Namely, I stabbing, a shooting, and lots of underage drinking. The City of Minneapolis fined them so heavily they had to close their doors for the last couple of months. Their website has also been out of commission during this time. Things will be getting back to normal, and better than normal over the next few weeks. They’re already remodeling some of the interior and we were told more was to come. Hopefully they can get things right, because Minneapolis can’t stand to lose one of it’s best rock houses.

Overall Grade: A

That is So Last Year

Posted: 4:02PM Tagged: Music

I’m sorry I haven’t graced anyone’s screen lately with my words. Frankly, I just haven’t thought of anything to write and I’ve been busy with Decoy, Aaron’s other projects, and my own personal stuff. I will post my show review for a show I checked out last week shortly though. Enough with the excuses though.

As usual, I’m almost always playing music whereever I am. As such, I listen to a lot of music throughout the day. I started noticing the other day how lackluster 2006 has been for music so far. Granted, we’ve barely reached the end of February, but I’m noticing a lack of solid new albums this year as compared with 2005.

The one and only album I’ve been “addicted” to from this year is Hawthorne Heights’ If Only You Were Lonely. I’m not proud of that because I know there’s better stuff out there, but HH is just so damn catchy.
I hope this isn’t a trend for the year. There really are a lot of releases I’m excited to hear. New Atreyu, It Dies Today, If Hope Dies, All That Remains are all in the pipe so maybe, I’ll change my mood. Last year Aaron asked me in January what I was anticipating in 2005. I remember saying Chimaira was the only one I could think of, but there were so many more releases last year I loved. Hopefully 2006 has some good newcomers too!

With all this lack of new music, I’ve been revisiting last year a lot lately. I’ve said before, I go through so much music, I often don’t have time to sit down and really listen to a lot of stuff. It’s nice to get a chance to revisit albums.

Seeing A Wilhelm Scream last week triggered my punk lobe in my brain. I’ve been listening to them a ton lately. Matt mentioned to me at the show he can’t figure out why they aren’t huge. I have to say, I find myself asking the same question. They’re so much more than basic pop punk. It’s agressive, it’s fast, and it’s fun! I overlooked Ruiner last year. I thought it had a few choice tracks, but nothing compared to 2004’s Mute Print. Well, I was wrong. It is a little weaker. I don’t find myself loving every track (,for the love of [insert holy diety reference here], don’t make another “In Vino Veritas II” again!), but most of the rest of the album is great.

Another album I’ve been enjoying much more this year is August Burns Red’s Thrill Seeker. Let me tell you, this album cooks! Front to back, it’s straight up heavy all the way through. To come out of the metalcore genre and make any sort of lasting impression on me musically is quite the feat.
