I decided to go to McDonalds for lunch today (probably not the best choice to begin with). I walked in and waited for my turn to order. When the woman behind the counter asked “Can I help the next person please?” I stepped forward and said “I’ll take a Crispy Chicken Sandwich meal please.” to which she returned a blank stare. Thinking she didn’t hear me (it was somewhat noisy), I repeated myself. This time she turned around, pointed to the menu, and asked “Which one?” In a semi state of shock, I humored her with the number of the meal and the transaction proceeded.
Has the average fast food employee’s intelligence dropped so low that they no longer understand the names of their own menu items? I hate to think what would have transpired had I made any sort of special request. The situation absolutely floored me.
I can’t see myself caring too much about my job if I was stuck at McD’s. I wouldn’t worry about memorizing the menu and no doubt the buttons on the register are for the number of the value meal. Still, yeah, the level of intelligence in your average service industry job is not exactly high.
@Rick
I figured the same about the register, but how hard is it to READ THE MENU. She had already turned around to point to it anyway. And I would guess if you work there for awhile those sort of things just get imprinted into your brain, I’m sure. Maybe not when you’re that stupid though.
